Managing Ash Dieback Trees in Meon
Managing Ash Dieback Near a Public Footpath in Meon
Managing Diseased Ash Trees Safely
This arboricultural project involved managing a number of ash trees affected by ash dieback on a property bordering a public footpath in Meon.
Several of the trees were showing signs of significant decline, increasing the risk of branch or tree failure close to an area regularly used by pedestrians. Because of the location, the work needed to be carried out carefully to reduce the risk while retaining trees where it was safe and practical to do so.
MEWP-Assisted Tree Surgery on Challenging Ground
Where possible, our arboriculturists used a Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) to access the affected trees and reduce their height.
The terrain was particularly difficult and required careful MEWP positioning to ensure safe access. Using the platform allowed the team to carry out controlled reductions on many of the trees and lessen the likelihood of branches or stems failing towards the footpath.
Climbing and Controlled Tree Felling
Not every tree could be reached safely using the MEWP, so a combination of arboricultural techniques was required.
Our experienced tree surgeons accessed suitable trees by climbing, allowing sections to be removed in a controlled manner. Where trees had deteriorated to the point that climbing was unsafe, they were felled using carefully planned and controlled techniques.
The project took place over several days and required the team to adapt their approach depending on the condition, position and accessibility of each tree.
Reducing the Risk from Ash Dieback
Ash dieback can significantly weaken affected trees over time, increasing the risk of branch loss and structural failure. This becomes particularly important where declining trees are close to roads, properties, public footpaths or other frequently used areas.
By reducing or removing the affected trees where necessary, we were able to lower the risk to people using the neighbouring footpath while helping the client manage the trees responsibly.
